I don’t know about you, but I’ve been doing without the mani-pedis this winter in an effort to save some dough. But yesterday my almost three year old daughter Eve was so sad that her older brother got to go to preschool while she stayed home, and my dried, cracked paws were a complete mess. So I did something I swore I’d never do: I treated my tiny princess and myself to mother-daughter manicures.
Indulgent? Sure. Propitiating the hyper-feminine fantasy while we’re still potty-training? Check. But my kid loved it. I thought she might, since she views a simple bang trim at the barbershop as a zen experience.
We went to Fantasy Nails in downtown Silver Spring, the place I frequent for its kind staff, nice atmosphere and reasonable prices. Sadly, there was only one other client in the place, further proof that small businesses are being hit hard in this economy. Eve took the choosing of her color very seriously, awestruck by the endless array of purples and pinks. She chose O.P.I. “Don’t Know…Beets Me!” for the hot pink color and funny name, and lamented at my choice of boring beige. Then she solemnly settled down for a $5 nail painting as the kind manicurist treated her just like a big girl, and offered the treat of painting her nails half pink, half glitter. Ohhh, were more wonderful words ever uttered?
The best part of the excursion was watching my daughter interact with good manners, make light conversation about her family and friends, and the unadulterated joy on her face as we did something special, “just mama and me.”
For a jolt of fanciful fun right smack in the middle of winter blues, it was $20 well spent.
