This week on A Parent in America you can win a T-Mobile Springboard™ with
Google, valued at $429.
How’s that for a cool way to start your summer?
The T-Mobile® SpringBoard is a brand new, versatile and affordable 4G tablet.
- Enjoy TV, games, music, books, magazines and the web on this perfectly portable, totally fun 7-inch tablet. It goes where you go and, with America’s Largest 4G Network, can keep up with the pace of your life.
- With the SpringBoard, you’ll have plenty of room for storage with 16GB of built-in memory, expandable up to an additional 32GB with a Micro SD card.
- Browse the web, check email, watch an entire movie and more for up to 7 hours – the SpringBoard tablet has the battery life you need.
- Stream music and video and connect to friends, family and work, with blazing-fast high-speed Internet access practically anywhere. And now it’s faster than ever.
Another just-released offering from T-Mobile is the HTC One S. It’s T-Mobile’s thinnest smartphone ever, one of T-Mobile’s fastest phones and of course it runs on America’s largest 4G Network.
- 4G smartphone with HTC Sense Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
- Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking (with optional Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot service)
- 8-MP camera
- HD 1080p camcorder and front-facing video chat camera
- Bluetooth stereo music
- 16 GB memory
- corporate and personal e-mail
And while only one reader will win the tablet, we all can learn some important tech safety tips that apply to our families this summer.
Through a suite of custom mobile applications and services, T-Mobile helps let you know where your kids are and that they are using their cell phone responsibly.
- FamilyWhere: Keep tabs on your kids by tracking the location of their phones. For your latchkey kid or teen, simply check in on your own phone as to the location of theirs.
- Web Guard: More and more people use phones to access the Internet every day—and that may include your kids. Web Guard is a free optional add-on feature, which restricts access to websites on your phone when you use the T-Mobile network. There are Child, Teen and Young Adult settings so the content that is restricted can change as your children grow. There is no charge to turn this feature on or off. (It’s not foolproof, of course, but it is a great start!)
- Family Allowances: Afraid that your child’s texting and minutes are going to go through the roof (and over budget) this summer? Family Allowances® makes it easy for parents to set up-front limits on family plan text messages, minutes and money spent on game and app downloads. Family Allowances keeps you in control and helps you avoid unexpected overage charges on your bill.
And that’s just the beginning of T-Mobile’s awesome features for families! Next week I’ll announce the giveaway winner and share more great tips from T-Mobile.

My kids are still little so my biggest concern is that when they’re using our smart devices they are using an educational app rather than just going directly to TV or videos on Netflix!

My biggest concern regarding technology and my children this summer is that they don’t become too attached and I still can convince them to spend time “offline” as well. Thanks for the giveaway!

What’s the line from Dr. Seuss? “Oh, the places you can go…”
Kids are naturally curious and can’t wait to check out all manner of sites their parents may not approve of. The exposure both in what they see and also in the electronic trail they leave (think predators, con-artists, etc.)…it all worries me.
But, kids still ought to have the opportunity to learn and grow despite the dangers.

I am worried about all the screen time my kids will have this summer. It is so hot outside and the kids do not enjoy going out as much.

My oldest just turned 13, and I have 10 year old twins. They of course enjoy trolling the internet, but have often come across less than savory web sites. We have some success with filtering out those sites with BSafe, an Internet monitoring service. Apparently they went out of business and we didn’t know, leaving our Internet unfiltered, and my kids stumbled upon a few horrid sites. We have NetNanny now and are getting used to it. It requires us to grant permission to access some department stores because they display swim suits. A little heavy-handed, but better safe than sorry!

My biggest concerns with my kids and technology this summer is that their dad just bought them an iPad 2 and they have already been disinterested in the usual family activities we partake. They usually clamor to go play Tennis but now apparently, virtual tennis is better! I think the only solution is to set up a password on the iPad so that only his father and I know how to unlock it and they will then have a time limit of 30 minutes each session on the iPad. If we won this Springboard, it would be a mommy and daddy toy. The kids already have their iPad, leave the Springboard for us!

I think the biggest I would have to worry about is the kids getting stuck inside in the house. Its much more convenient to just roll over in bed and have a computer/tv right next to you to find out everything you need. There are a lot of things to enjoy outdoors and best you experience first hand. Im afraid sometimes my kids will miss out on those things being cooped up inside on facebook or playing games. As much technology is a blessing, it sometimes can be a curse!

We don’t have tv so at least in some ways we are protecting our kids. On the other hand, it is so easy to let them watch a video or play a game on the computer just to get 30m quiet..

Car trips tend to attract technology — the girls both have Leapsters and DVD player screens. It’s difficult to monitor the time spent playing on those when it’s a choice between that and “Are we there yet?” every 10 minutes. They’re both too young to read, so a lot of the car games are too advanced for them. I’m concerned they’ll be immersed.

Well I don’t have kids of my own yet, but I am very close to my friend’s kids. I worry the most about the older daughter who is 12 because she never seems to take a break from her texting to experience life. I hope she doesn’t spend her whole summer attatched to her phone.

Probably my biggest concern is finding the right balance between screen time and non-screen time for my 11 year old and 13 year old. We’ve done pretty well with this so far, but the challenge is updating our rules as the kids get older.
