winter-capsule-wardrobe

Over the last month I have been wearing the same, very few items over and over and over…and receiving nice feedback. Due to the extreme cold and laziness, I unwittingly developed a winter capsule wardrobe. I like having a uniform that is still a bit stylish. These flattering, and in most cases very affordable, mix and match items are keeping me cozy now and will all also transition well into (please Lord, get here quickly) spring.

Alternative slouchy gray sweatshirt  $16 Amazon: I love the current trend of dressing up comfy, slouchy gray sweatshirts. I wear this with jeans, sure, but also with the “leather” skirt and bib necklace for accessible, modern glam. I also like the Charley sweater $45 at J. Crew Factory for a similar look.

Heirloom Finds chunky statement necklace and earring set  $22 at Amazon: A blinged out bib necklace transforms the gray sweatshirt from the gym to meetings or dates.  I also like the designs and the low price points of the statement necklaces at DailyLook.

Zara 3/4 sleeve blouse $49 at Zara: This is the most versatile, flattering, awesome black blouse I have found in a looooong time. Looks great tucked, left out or even the hipster half tuck (which I try and then pull out after I leave the house, though I think it looks cute on other gals.) Runs small in the chest and shoulders but goes up to size XL. If  you are not into rayon, C. Wonder makes a great silk pullover blouse ($118)  and a fab stretch cotton ($58), too.

GUESS Women’s Power Skinny low-rise denim leggings $79 at Amazon (I found mine at TJMaxx for $39): If you are a woman with curves and shapely calves, it can be hard to find a pair of skinny jeans in a wash other than ultra dark. But these medium blues are so flattering and they are the perfect on-trend ankle length without being “high water” weird. Run a little big (love that!) I’m long-waisted and I do not find the rise very low at all, contrary to the name; these hit one or two inches below my navel. In case you, like me, pathetically watch the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, these are the jeans the beautiful Yolanda wears. (Hermès belt not included.)

TopShop faux leather a-line skirt $76 at Nordstrom: I picked up my pleather a-line skirt with an exposed zipper in the back at Target and that baby has seen me through tons of events both festive and formal this winter. I love to pair it with the sweatshirt for a modern high/low look, or the blouse for an edgier take on the LBD. This TopShop version is the closest match I could locate online.  Target does have a cloth version in the same ultra flattering cut in five colors, however: Mossimo Ponte Fit & Flare Skirt $22 at Target.

Aerosoles black suede lace-up booties $64 at Amazon: All hail the Aerosoles that do not look like Aerosoles. You can wear these all day at a conference or all night dancing at a concert without your dogs barking. I love heeled lace up booties because they make the legs look long and transition to spring better than high boots.

Donna Karan Hosiery Opaque Tights $17 at Amazon: Donna (we are on a first-name basis after years of me wearing her tights) makes the best hosiery. I’m obsessed.

Kate Spade Cobble Hill Curtis in Smoke $174 at Amazon and more styles on sale right now on KateSpade.comI received a Kate Spade Cobble Hill handbag for Christmas from my bonus mom Toni and I want to marry it. Thanks Toni! It looks cool and chic, has two compartments inside (I use one  side for my mom needs, the other side for my professional persona) and will last forever.

Michael Kors oversized two tone watch $205 at Amazon: Chunky or even men’s watches make wrists look delicate, and  watches with both silver and gold go with everything.

Vintage Inspired Round Horned Sunglasses $8 at Amazon: You know those $500 Cutler and Gross sunglasses in the J. Crew catalog that make you simultaneously drool and gag? These look like those and cost less than a sandwich.

I have joined María José Ovalle of Very Busy Mama, Ellen of Thrifty and Chic Mom and Andrea of Momma in Flip Flops in the #RealMomStyle link up. María José writes of this endeavor:

This post is about real moms who have real style. While we all fall into the jeans and t-shirt rut we are encouraging our fellow moms to take the time to dress their best and rock it like the rock star moms they are! Did you look especially good this week, were the other moms at the playground complimenting your outfit? Share the look that worked for both potty training, the playground and coffee with a friend and let’s inspire each other with some real mom fashion!
