No kid is too young to experience his or her first runDisney race!

My spunky Alice, at just two and three-quarters, simply loved running in a runDisney Kids Run last weekend when we attended a #DisneyKids preschool blogger media event at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Alice and I were was wowed by the gorgeous, professional track at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. I myself have run that track during a runDisney race, and it was so exciting for my youngest child to experience that inspiring athletic moment herself.

Alice loved the entire experience of the runDisney Kids Run, from the stretching with a coach, the “on your mark,” jogging her little heart out alongside other “big kids,” to crossing the finish line and launching herself right into Mickey’s arms.

Yes, Mickey Mouse himself was there cheering the kids on at the finish line, which made the race crazy special.

You may have heard about runDisney events for adults such as the Disney Princess Half Marathon, but runDisney has kids’ races and family events, too! runDisney race weekends include Disney-themed family 5K fun runs and kids’ races. Families can run together in the 5Ks. The Kids’ Runs include Diaper Dashes for crawlers, 100 meter dashes for kids 1-3 years old, 200 meter dashes for kids 4-6, 400 meter dashes for kids 7-8 and a 1 mile run for kids 13 and under (parents can run with their kids for the one mile.)

Just like in adult races, kids take home a finisher medallion and receive a race t-shirt. During the 5Ks there are Disney characters and entertainment along the course, refreshments during and after the races, swag bags and personalized runDisney bibs. If you stay at a Walt Disney World resort, all transportation to the 5K and Kids Races are provided.

But the best part? Disney characters attend every race to cheer on the participating kids and celebrate with a hug at the finish line.

A runDisney race weekend is a fabulous way to get everyone in the family involved in exercise and fitness with a Disney flair!

Upcoming runDisney family events that still have room and open registration:

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend at Walt Disney World October 3-4, 2014. The 10-miler is sold out, but the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and runDisney Kids Races have room! Teens, tweens, adults and kids who can run a 5K on their own are all invited to run the scenic Hapy Haunted course that winds through the spectacular ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon November 7-8, 2014 is sold out, but the runDisney Kids Races that weekend are open for families looking for a sporty, Disney-fied fall visit.

The first ever Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon is November 14-16 at Disneyland in California, and registration opens tomorrow March 25! If you are a runner, you can register to run the Half, then participate in the Super Heroes Family 5K with your family and your kids can participate in the runDisney Kids Run. How’s that for a super hero weekend?

The biggest runDisney event weekend is the Walt Disney World Marathon January 7-11, 2015.  This weekend offers the most options for families. There is the marathon throughout all four Walt Disney World theme parks, sure. There is also a 10K and a Family 5K. But there is also a half marathon, a Goofy Race and a Half Challenge which combines Saturday’s half marathon with Sunday’s full Marathon and the Dopey, which combines the 5K, 10K, half and full marathons. Of course, there is also an amazing runDisney Kids Run for the little ones and more events for this premiere runDisney experience. Registration for all events opens April 22.
