Tomorrow, July 24, is International Self-Care Day. I believe that every supermom reading this needs to add the observation of this date to her already-packed calendar.

How can you celebrate International Self-Care Day?

  • Go for a run
  • Go for a smoothie run
  • Take a yoga class
  • Take a nap
  • Call your optometrist to book your overdue eye exam
  • Call your best friend for an overdue catch-up session

Because a real supermom takes care of herself. She does not neglect her physical and mental health at the expense of taking care of her family. During these wacky and wild summer months with the children home from school, this sentiment is so important.

It took me a long time to apply this advice to my own life. In past summers, I took on more than I could handle. What always suffered was my health, inside and out. This summer I am changing my pattern and taking this self-care thing seriously. Check out my video of how I am changing my definition of supermom this summer.

According to the World Health Organization, self-care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, and prevent and treat illness. It is a broad concept encompassing hygiene, nutrition, lifestyle and self medication.

OTC medicines, vitamins and supplements empower us supermoms to take charge of our self-care. Whether it is remembering to apply sunscreen to our own bodies — not just our children’s — or to stop during a busy day to take something for that nagging headache, it is important that we as moms give just as much love to our own everyday health as we do for everyone else in our family.
