My “after” picture, taken before going on-air on Great Day Washington this month.  17 pounds down, no Spanx cutting off my circulation and my pants look lame because they are too big. Yay!

I had a great experience on the Jenny Craig plan “last semester.” I lost 17 pounds and gained muscle. I look better and feel better.

Most importantly, after pregnancies and nursing through my late twenties and thirties, it was a good experience to learn how to drop extra weight on my now 40-year-old bod. Things work differently now and weight loss is harder won.

I learned that in order for my 5’7 body to lose weight at this age, there is no cutting corners. For any lasting weight loss to happen, I have to be in “training” mode all of the time. No slacking. The twenty-something girl tricks no longer work. Now I know that I will only drop excess pounds if I consistently:

  • Sleep 8 hours
  • Skip alcohol
  • Exercise every single day
  • Eat clean, mainly vegetables, lean protein and whole grains
  • Minimal sugar, no artificial sweetener
  • Lots of water
  • Keep calorie consumption between 1,200 and 1,500 (more if necessary on active days)
  • Track weight weekly

Jenny Craig was a reset and a reminder that if I stick to those rules, I will lose weight.  It was a helpful to have a personal consultant for accountability and coaching, and convenient shorthand to have all the daily menus planned out. Those months with Jenny Craig allowed new habits to be established and ingrained.

Now I am back to completely preparing all my own meals (I cooked for the family throughout, and now I have rejoined them,) and I am enjoying it. I missed my recipes and fully fresh foods. But I am keeping the portion size rules learned over the last months with Jenny. I am tracking calories, activity and weight via the MyFitnessPal iPhone app in order to keep the habits up and not become complacent. (Which I can totally do if I let myself. “Heeyyy, I can drink beer on Tuesday! And Wednesday! Let’s order Thai!” Not great tactics if you are trying for lower BMI.)
