Don’t let the filter fool you: After years of worshipping the sun, it has officially caught up to me. In addition to mild acne, I now have uneven pigmentation on face, especially on my forehead and nose, the areas that most absorbed the blasts of the sun as I “laid out.”  Luckily, I do not have to continue to take this sun damage lying down. Thanks to the medical-grade skin care services at Center for Plastic Surgery in Chevy Chase and Annandale, I can be like Cher and turn back time.

Well, not a total Cher. Although the sign says Center for Plastic Surgery, the CPS team provides many services that are completely non-surgical. I am all about facials that are non-invasive and gently treat and improve my skin, and CPS Docs provides so many professional options.

Microdermabrasion + Glycolic Acid Treatment

On my first visit this summer I received a HydraFacial and it immediately improved the texture and clarity of my skin. On my fall visit Skin Care Specialist Amy Pasion, R.N. recommended we begin with microdermabrasion. She used the DiamondTome Skin Resurfacing System, a medical-grade, crystal-free treatment that effectively and safely removes the topmost layer of the skin, revealing the more supple and vibrant underlying layers. This microdermabrasion system also vacuums away the old skin cells to leave the skin clear, bright and smooth. Amy did two passes over my entire face, however the treatment was pain free.

Now that my skin was completely exfoliated, it was amenable to a careful extraction of my clogged pores and then a glycolic treatment. Amy chose the glycolic acid to reduce wrinkles, acne scarring and hyper-pigmentation, improving my skin’s appearance and texture. She also completely pampered me with a shoulder massage.

One week later, after a small amount of peeling and some lurking pimples brought to the surface from the treatment, my skin is clearer, softer and smoother than ever. I can see the discoloration from the sun near my hairline on my forehead is reduced, and over the week I watched some of it literally flake away. This treatment was more aggressive than my facial in the summer, and thus the benefits were more dramatic and took more time to be evident.

At-Home Products

To continue this trajectory of skin improvement, I purchased products Amy recommended for at-home treatment of my sun damage. I will be using CPS Doc’s brand of Retin-A (Tretinoin) mixed with Obagi Blender with Hydroquinone to further treat the sun damage and pigmentation issues. Amy said that the fall and winter, when I will be out of the sun more than in summer, are great times to perform this at-home treatment. I may have some peeling as the old, damaged, sun-spotted skin flakes away but I can wear makeup and sunscreen as usual. These medical grade skin care products are only available for purchase from a provider such as CPS Docs, and the formulas are much higher than the over the counter products available at drug and department stores.
